The 43-year-old actress let out a 'little yelp' when her agent called her on Thursday morning informing her of her Best Actress nomination for her role as a real-life survivor of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami in The Impossible.
Her awards recognition came on the same day her son Samuel, known as Kai, celebrated his fourth birthday and Naomi - who also has son Alexander 'Sasha', five, with her partner Liev Schreiber - is looking forward to them both celebrating with cake.

Speaking on the Today Show, she said:
'It's my son's birthday today. He's upset that I made that yelp. I had
to explain what it was. Mommy got good news. And he said, "It's my
birthday."'We're having cake after school. It's all about Kai today. I won't get to celebrate until this weekend.'
And the star stuck to her promise, as the whole family were later seen celebrating together with Kai in a festive red crown, and Naomi carrying a cake.

Thanking the Hollywood Foreign Press Association that organises the ceremony, she said: 'As an actor you look for roles that are rich, complicated, and that stretch you and this year I was blessed to find two.
'To have the chance to play them was a gift in itself and to then be acknowledged this way is icing on the cake. Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press!'

Speaking about his Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Motion Picture Drama nominations for Django Unchained, he said: 'It's very gratifying to get this many nominations from the HFPA for a film I worked so hard on and am so passionate about.
'I look forward to having fun at the Golden Globes with my castmates and fellow nominees.'
